The Graduate Program in Global Studies (GPGS) at Sophia University offers a Double (Dual) Degree Program with SOAS University of London. Under this program, students study at Sophia University and SOAS and pursue an eligible master’s degree at each institution.

Sophia University students may pursue either the MA Japanese Studies or the MA Translation and Intercultural Studies at SOAS. Upon successfully completing the academic requirements of both universities, students receive two separate master’s degrees, one from Sophia University and one from SOAS. The programs at both universities are taught in English.

Study Schedule

Students who wish to participate in the Double Degree Program must notify the GPGS Office as soon as possible after enrolling at Sophia University and submit the prescribed application form by the designated deadline.

Applicants will first undergo an internal selection process at Sophia University. Students who pass the internal selection process and are nominated by Sophia University must subsequently apply for admission to the relevant master’s program at SOAS and meet its applicable admission requirements. The final admission decision is made by SOAS. Nomination by Sophia University does not guarantee admission to SOAS.

Tuition Fees

During the one-year period of study at SOAS, participating students are responsible for tuition fees charged by both Sophia University and SOAS.

Students may apply for a scholarship that provides a reduction in Sophia University tuition fees during their period of study at SOAS. A separate application is required for this scholarship.

Students must pay the applicable SOAS tuition fees directly to SOAS.

Students assessed by SOAS as paying the international tuition fee rate are eligible for a 20% discount on their SOAS program tuition fees under this Double Degree Program.

SOAS tuition fees vary according to the academic year, program, and student’s fee status and are subject to change. For current fee information, please refer to the SOAS Postgraduate Taught Fees webpage.

Students are responsible for other expenses associated with studying at SOAS, including travel, accommodation, living expenses, and visa application costs.

The Graduate School of Global Studies at Sophia University offers a Double Degree Program with the Master of Arts in International Development Studies (MAIDS) at Chulalongkorn University.

The program is currently open to students enrolled in the following graduate programs at Sophia University:

Graduate Program in Global Studies
Graduate Program in Area Studies
Graduate Program in International Relations

Students enrolled in the Graduate Program in International Cooperation are not currently eligible to participate in this program.

Under the Double Degree Program, Sophia University students study at Chulalongkorn University during the first and second trimesters, from August to March. Upon successfully completing the academic requirements of both universities, students receive two separate master’s degrees, one from Sophia University and one from Chulalongkorn University.

The program structure and requirements for academic year 2027 and beyond are subject to change due to planned curriculum changes at Chulalongkorn University. The universities are currently reviewing the future arrangements for the Double Degree Program, including whether the program can continue in its current form. Further information will be announced once it becomes available.
