The European countries I focus on—particularly those of Western Europe—may differ from Japan in cultural background, yet as advanced industrialized nations they share many similarities with it. Observing the political processes and institutional structures of Western Europe can therefore provide valuable insights for understanding Japanese politics. I hope that, while engaging in the study of foreign political systems, you will also maintain a comparative perspective that allows you to reflect on the situation in Japan.
