Development Economics, International Economics, International Trade, Economics of Happiness
My research examines the relationship between the structure of market economies and trade patterns on the one hand, and poverty and economic development on the other. I also study the determinants of well‑being and their implications for public policy. Current research interests include the relationship between poverty and globalization, the links between international trade and migrant labor, and the economic analysis of happiness.
  • Message
The social structures that generate poverty and oppression run deep, and we ourselves—often unconsciously—become part of their machinery. If we are to address these problems, we must therefore consciously reexamine and critically reflect upon every aspect of our own values and ways of living. After such reflection, we must be willing to transform our values and our daily practices. This, I believe, is the essence of socially meaningful scholarship. As you learn more, consider how you wish to apply the knowledge and insight you gain. How will you use your studies to help build a society in which every person is valued equally and without exception? I look forward to learning together with all of you and working collaboratively toward the transformation of ourselves and our society.
